The Wonder That is the Honduran Typical Dish

In Central America, you will encounter the 'plato tipico', or the typical plate, in many locations. It just means a plate of the usual fare people eat around that neck of the woods. It usually includes ubiquitous eggs, some salty white cheese, rice, plantains or other cooked bananas, and other cooked protein like sausages, chicken, or a tasty pork chop.

In Honduras, the typical dish includes hand-mashed refried black beans, eggs, and cheese. I liked it when tiny sausages, the kind that come in strings, were added. Large, mature bananas called 'majonchos' were sliced and fried. And to all of it could be added what the locals called butter, mantequilla, which isn't like butter in the United States, but more like a runny sour cream that gives a tart, creamy kick to everything.

All of this is accompanied by the Honduran-style tortilla. This differs from the Mexican types in that it is made of corn and is about a third smaller in diameter and maybe three times thicker, making for a chunkier tortilla. They are incredible and a perfect addition to everything in this dish.
